WORK EXPERIENCE: 1976 –pres. Adjunct Professor:
Lansing Community College, Lansing, MI, Delta College, University Center, MI, Mid Michigan Community College, Harrison, MI.
I developed and taught courses in the Health and Fitness, Health Careers, Dance, and Student Development Services Departments
at LCC and taught in the Social Science Department at Delta College and the Health Education Department at Mid Michigan Community
College. I developed a course in Stress Management at Lansing Community College which I have taught since 1982.
2001
- 2012 MidMichigan Health Park- Houghton Lake - Psychologist/Social Worker and Clinical Supervisor.
I provide counseling and individual, family, marital and group treatment to general referrals in a medical setting.
I developed a brief therapy group process for people suffering from stress, anxiety, and depression. I make hiring recommendations
and supervised clinical social work staff and trained interns in Social Work and Counseling.
1979 –pres.
Psychologist and Consultant: Private practice. Individual and family psychotherapy.
I also developed and taught workshops and provide consultation regarding empowerment, stress management, parenting and poverty
programs. I have worked privately and under contract with: State of MI FIA Office of Training and Staff Development,
FIA AmeriCorp Program, The Huron Valley Institute, Clinical Resources Inc., Psychological Associates, Northern MI Health
Services and provided training and workshops for a number of private organizations and businesses.
1991 -2000
Hard Times Cafe (HTC), Harrison, MI. I co-founded and facilitated the development of an empowerment
program for people in poverty that has served over 1500 people. Participants had authority over all program functions
including administrative and office operations, running businesses and providing services. I served as consultant, advisor
and counselor and designed a self-managing team process as well as economic and computer systems where participants earned
Points of Improvement (POI) for demonstrating positive work habits and job skills while gaining training and work experience
in the program. POI are exchanged for merchandise available through HTC businesses or for vouchers for necessities.
I was responsible for writing grants, hiring and supervising staff and facilitating meetings. I also developed Family
Enrichment Teams, a participant managed process that focuses on improving skills, capabilities and conditions that remove
obstacles to employment and lead to healthy relationships. In 1998, HTC was appointed lead agency to coordinate Clare
County’s application to become a Federal Enterprise Community (EC). I designed the planning process, facilitated
community town hall meetings, and organized advisory boards and as steering committee that represented a wide range of community
interests. Clare County was one of 20 rural communities nationwide that received the EC designation.
1990 -1996 Psychologist: Catholic Family Services of Saginaw Diocese, Mt. Pleasant, MI.
I provided individual, family and marital therapy and community presentations with a primary focus on the treatment
of stress-related disorders, depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress.
1986 -1992 Psychologist;
Central Michigan Community Mental Health, Harrison and Mt. Pleasant, MI. Duties included: Outpatient psychotherapy
with children adolescents, adults and families; individual and group psychotherapy and interdisciplinary team evaluations
for chronically mentally ill persons. I developed a series of parenting classes and group therapy programs for pain management,
anxiety, and stress management.
1983 - 1985 Psychologist: North Central Community
Mental Health, Cadillac, MI. Responsibilities included clinical assessment and participation in the interdisciplinary
team process serving developmentally disabled persons living in a four county area.
1977 - 1981
Psychologist: State of Michigan, Department of Mental Health, Caro Regional Mental Health Center, Caro,
MI and Hillcrest Center for Developmental Disabilities, Howell, MI. Responsibilities included clinical assessment and
participation in the interdisciplinary team process for developmentally disabled persons living in DMH residential facilities.
Activities include: designing and coordinating the development of a Behavior Treatment Unit, setting up an activities program
for residents unable to attend outside programs because of hyperactive or disruptive behavior, designing and teaching staff
development programs, developing documentation procedures and initiating a system which enhanced the efficiency of the interdisciplinary
team process.
1977 - 1985 Mime and Improvisational Theater: I performed
as Fumbles the Clown and as part of the Fumbles and Shuffles Mime Team at parades, festivals, dinner programs and benefits
throughout Michigan.
1976 - 1977 Prevention Analyst: Office of Juvenile
Justice Services, State of Michigan, Lansing, MI. Responsibilities included research regarding the etiology and prevention
of juvenile delinquency and child abuse and neglect, coordination of the Primary Prevention Task Force, involvement in the
development of goals, objectives and strategies for the State of Michigan in these areas, and writing sections of the Comprehensive
Plan for Juvenile Justice Services for the State of Michigan.
1976 Child
Care Coordinator: Office for Young Children, Lansing, MI. Responsibilities included writing two newsletters,
acting as a resource person, and coordinating the development of a support organization for child care providers.
1973 - 1974 Psychology Practicum: MSU Psychological Clinic, Michigan State University
and Ingham Intermediate School district, Mason MI. Supervised psychotherapy and assessment with children, adolescents,
and families.
1972 - 1974 Teacher and Director: Sunshine Cooperative Preschool,
Lansing MI. Responsibilities included developing and implementing a curriculum for preschool children and training parents
volunteers and aides.
